Product photos
A product’s photos are what shoppers look at before they read a word. The Photos tab on a product is where you add them, choose the cover (the first photo shoppers see, in search and on the product page) and write the alt text that describes each one.
Commerce → Products → My Products → your product → Photos.
The tab intro sums it up: The photos shoppers see on the product page and in search, cover first. Upload, replace or remove a photo, pick the cover and write alt text for shoppers who use a screen reader. Every seller of this product shows these photos.
Add photos
Section titled “Add photos”- Click Add photos, or drop images onto the panel (Drop images here, or choose files). You can pick several at once. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images work.
- Each one shows a preview while it uploads, then joins the end of the list. You see Photo added (or 3 photos added).
The very first photo a product gets becomes its cover. A file that isn’t an image is turned down by name: … isn’t an image. Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF file.
With no photos yet, the tab says No photos yet and Add a few clear shots of the product. The first one becomes the cover.
Work on one photo
Section titled “Work on one photo”Each photo has an actions menu:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Make cover | Puts this photo first. You see Cover changed. |
| Replace photo | Pick a new file; it takes this photo’s place in one go. You see Photo replaced. |
| Edit alt text | Opens Alt text, where you describe the photo (up to 500 characters). Save alt text saves it. |
| Remove photo | Asks Remove this photo? first. Remove photo takes it off the product; Keep it cancels. |
Removing a photo takes it off this product only. The file stays in your media library. Remove the cover and the next photo becomes the cover.
Write good alt text
Section titled “Write good alt text”Alt text is read aloud to shoppers who can’t see the photo, and it helps image search find your product. Describe what is in the shot: the product, its colour, how it’s shown. The dialog’s own example is a good model: Red nylon dog collar with a silver buckle, laid flat.
A photo without alt text carries a No alt text flag, so you can spot the ones left to do.
Who else sees these photos
Section titled “Who else sees these photos”The photos belong to the product, not to your offer: every seller of this product shows them. If someone on your team has the Designer role, they can work on this tab and on the product’s copy (its name, descriptions and search fields), not on its prices, stock or selling settings.
If something went wrong
Section titled “If something went wrong”- Couldn’t load the photos. Click Try again.
- Couldn’t add the photo, Couldn’t replace the photo, Couldn’t change the cover, Couldn’t remove the photo or Couldn’t save the alt text: nothing changed. Try again in a moment.
- An upload fails because your storage is full: see Storage space.
