Selling a membership tier

If your organization runs a membership program, each published tier can be put on sale so that people can join it and pay its dues. This page covers the List for sale window, and especially the choice of how the dues are billed.

Memberships → Overview, open the program, then choose List for sale on one of its published tiers. Tiers that are not published yet don’t have the button.

Dues are paid to your organization, so you need to receive payments first. Until you have set that up, the window shows Set up payments before selling memberships instead of the steps — see Receive payments.

The window titled List “<tier>” for sale has three steps. Each one is optional and they run in order; a step that is done shows a check and what it created.

  1. Catalog detail — choose Create catalog detail to turn the tier into an item people can buy.
  2. Marketplace listing — lists the tier for sale from a storefront.
    • Storefront handle — the storefront it is sold from (not the tier’s name). It starts with the platform’s storefront.
    • Funding account id — the account that receives the money for the listing. It is filled in for you; change it only if you know the right account.
    • Choose List on marketplace.
  3. Price — the dues members pay.
    • Amount and Currency (it follows the storefront’s currency unless you pick another).
    • Dues billing — how the dues are charged; see below.
    • Choose Add price.

A price needs the catalog detail or the marketplace listing to attach to, so do step 1 or step 2 first.

Dues billingWhat members payHow it renews
Yearly — renews automatically (the default)The amount once a year.By itself at the end of each year, on the member’s saved card.
Monthly — renews automaticallyThe amount every month.By itself at the end of each month, on the member’s saved card.
One payment per termThe amount once for a term (the tier’s term length). The member renews by hand before the term ends.

A lifetime tier is always paid once, so it only offers One payment per term.

With yearly or monthly dues, members decide for themselves: the payment step offers Renew automatically, ticked, and they can switch it off or on later on their membership. They are reminded before each renewal (30 and 7 days before for yearly dues, 7 days before for monthly dues), and a membership whose renewal payment fails keeps working through a grace period while the payment is tried again.

Each payment — the first one and every automatic renewal — is paid out to your organization, less the platform fee, like any other sale. See Fees.
