Selling a pet food
You don’t type in a pet food to sell it. United Pet Club keeps a catalog of commercial pet foods with their labels (see Look up a pet food): you pick the food and the package you sell, and your listing comes with the label facts, barcodes, feeding guide and ingredient list. You set only your price, stock and delivery.
Every seller of the same package lists the same store product, so buyers see all the sellers of that bag or can side by side, and the food’s page on the website shows your offer under Sold on United Pet Club.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Your profile must be able to sell: see Start selling.
- Prescription diets (veterinary diets such as kidney or urinary care foods) need an approved Prescription
diets selling permit. Ask for it under Commerce → Selling Permits (
/dashboard/commerce/seller-authorization). - The food must be in the catalog. If it isn’t, add it from a pet’s Diet page (Adding a food that isn’t in the catalog); our team reviews it, and once it is published you can sell it.
- Commerce → Products (
/dashboard/commerce/products) → Sell a pet food. - Or, on the website, open the food’s page and choose Sell this in my store under a package (or under Sold on United Pet Club). The Dashboard opens with that package already picked.
The page is Sell a pet food (/dashboard/commerce/products/pet-food).
List a food
Section titled “List a food”-
Under Find the food, type at least 2 letters of the name or brand, or the barcode digits, in Search the pet food catalog. Matching foods lists what fits. If nothing does: “No food in the catalog matches. Check the spelling, or type the barcode printed on the package.”
-
Choose the food, then answer Which package do you sell? Each package shows its primary barcode. A prescription food carries Prescription, a recalled one Recalled. Back to results returns to the list.
-
Check the package you’re listing: the Brand, the Package and its Barcodes. Notes appear here when they apply:
- “Prescription diet: you need an approved prescription-diet selling permit.”
- “This food has an open recall. A package under the recall can’t be listed until the recall closes.”
Wrong package? Choose another package.
-
Choose Sell this food. The sell wizard opens on the store product for that package: set your price and stock, delivery, where you sell, and your returns, then go live.
The product’s name is the brand, food and package (for example Purina Pro Plan Adult Lamb, 30 lb bag). It is filed under the right shelf for the food’s form and species, and a prescription food under Prescription Diet. You can’t rename it: it is shared by every seller of that package. What you control is your offer.
When the food can’t be listed
Section titled “When the food can’t be listed”The page says why, and where to go next:
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| ”This is a prescription diet. To sell it you need an approved prescription-diet selling permit.” | Go to selling permits and apply for Prescription diets. The store also refuses an offer for it until the permit is approved. |
| ”This package is under an open recall, so it can’t be listed until the recall closes.” | See open recalls opens the recall notices. Try again once the recall is closed. |
| ”This package can’t be sold: it is no longer made or isn’t published yet.” | Pick another package or food. |
| ”The store service didn’t answer. Try again in a minute.” | Nothing is lost; choose Sell this food again. |
| ”Your session has ended. Sign in again, then select Sell this food.” | Sign in again. |
When a recall names a food you sell
Section titled “When a recall names a food you sell”When our team publishes a recall that covers a package you have on sale:
- Your offer is paused right away: it stays visible in the store, but buyers can’t buy it. You can’t switch it back on while the recall holds it.
- If you track stock in lots, the lots the recall names (by lot code or best-by date) are flagged Recalled. When the notice names no lot or date, all your current lots of that product are flagged.
- When the recall is closed, or an update no longer names your package, your offer goes back on sale by itself. Lots flagged Recalled stay out of sale.
If the stock you hold is outside the recalled lots and best-by dates, the offer can be released with a short note saying why your stock is not affected; the note is kept with the offer. There is no Dashboard button for this yet.
