Paying for your plan

Each paid plan and add-on is paid by a card you choose. You can change that card at any time, add up to three backup cards that are tried when the first one is declined, and, if a payment fails, pay now instead of waiting for the next try.

Account → Billing → Funding sources (/account/billing/funding-sources), in the Plan payments section under the card on file. It lists every paid plan on your account, and plans that ended in the last 30 days.

In the Dashboard, Finances → Billing (/dashboard/finances/billing) shows the same section for the profile you are working as.

The link in a “payment failed” e-mail opens this section with that plan highlighted.

  • The plan’s name, its price per month or per year, and the date of the next charge.
  • Cards for this plan: the Primary card first, then Backup 1, Backup 2 and Backup 3 if you added any. Each shows its brand, last four digits and expiry. A card that was declined shows when, and the reason the bank gave.
  • A red Your payment didn’t go through box when the last payment failed (see When a payment fails).

A plan billed through the App Store or Google Play shows a note instead of cards. Change its payment details in the store.

  1. Find the plan and select Change card.
  2. Enter the new card. Your bank may ask you to confirm it’s you. Nothing is charged now.
  3. Select Save card.

You’ll see Confirming the card with your bank…, then a message such as Visa ···· 4242 now pays for this plan. The new card replaces the old one for this plan only. Your other plans and your card on file stay as they are.

If your bank takes longer, the window closes with We’re still confirming your card. It will show here in a minute. Check back in a minute. Don’t enter the card again.

Backup cards are tried in order when the primary card is declined, straight away, in the same attempt. A plan can have up to three. They are also tried if your bank accepts a payment and then refuses it later, for example when it returns a bank debit a few days after.

  1. Select Add a backup card.
  2. If you have a card on file, choose Use my card on file or Add a new card. Your card on file is charged for this plan only when you choose it here.
  3. For a new card, enter it and select Save card.

To swap a backup card for another one, select Replace next to it. To take one off, select Remove. It won’t be tried any more.

The primary card can be changed but not removed. To stop paying for a plan, turn off auto-renew or cancel the plan under Account → Subscriptions.

When a card changes at your bank or our payment provider

Section titled “When a card changes at your bank or our payment provider”

When your bank reissues a card with a new expiry date or number, the plan shows the new details by itself. You don’t need to do anything.

If a card is removed at our payment provider, it comes off every plan that uses it and is never tried again. If it was the primary card and the plan has a backup card, the first backup becomes the primary card. If it was the plan’s only card, the plan shows No card is set to renew this plan. It ends on {date} unless you add one. To keep the plan, select Add a card (or Change card on a plan whose payment failed) before that date.

When you change a card or remove a backup, the old card is also deleted from our payment provider, unless another of your plans uses it or it is your card on file.

A plan belongs to the profile it was bought for, not to the account that pays for it. The account that owns the profile pays for its plans. So when a profile changes owner (a business is handed to someone else, for example), the new owner’s account pays from the next payment on:

  • The previous owner’s cards come off the profile’s plans and are never charged for them again. The plans also leave the previous owner’s Plan payments list.
  • If the new owner has a card on file, it becomes the plan’s card.
  • If the new owner has no card on file, the next renewal can’t be paid and the plan follows the usual failed-payment tries. Add a card to the plan before the last try to keep it.

The new owner sees the plans in Plan payments while working as the profile. If a payment made with the previous owner’s card is still being confirmed by the bank, the plan moves once it is confirmed. Until then the new owner can see the plan but can’t change its cards.

A plan without a card shows No card is set to renew this plan. It ends on … unless you add one. Select Add a card, then use your card on file or add a new card as above. Once the card is saved, the plan renews on its renewal date.

When a plan renews and every card on it is declined, the plan shows Payment failed. You keep the plan’s features while we try again:

TryWhen
1On the renewal date
2 and 3The next day, then the day after
4, 5 and 6Once a week
7, 8 and 9Once a month

The red box says how many tries have failed and when the next one is, for example Attempt 1 of 9 failed. We’ll try again on Sep 24, 2026. Before the last try it adds The next try is the last one. If it fails, the plan is cancelled. If the ninth try fails too, the plan is cancelled and its features stop. If you want the plan back after that, buy it again: it is a new plan that starts on the day you pay.

Changing the card does not restart the count. Your own Pay now attempts never count as tries, even one your bank accepts at first and refuses later: the plan stays past due and the next try is still on the date the red box shows.

After each failed try we also send you an e-mail and a dashboard notification with the date of the next try, a warning before the last one, and a message if the plan is cancelled. Their Update your card link opens this section on the plan. See E-mails about your plan.

  1. In the red box, select Pay now.
  2. Check the amount and the card, then select Pay with the amount. We charge the primary card, and your backup cards in order if it is declined.

The amount is the plan’s price plus anything that renewal carries: on Pro, a change in your locations or vehicles, and campaign emails you sent past your allowance with Send anyway (see Pro plan and add-ons).

What you’ll see:

MessageWhat it means
Payment received. Your plan is active again.Paid. Nothing else to do.
Payment accepted. Your plan will show as active in a moment.Your bank is still confirming. Don’t pay again.
Visa ···· 4242 was declined (insufficient funds). Change the card or try again later.Every card was declined and nothing was charged. Select Change card, or try again later.
A payment for this plan is already being processed. An earlier payment is still on its way. A card payment is confirmed within minutes, but a bank payment can take a few business days. Don’t pay again. The plan turns active once it’s confirmed, and if it doesn’t go through, Pay now comes back.
We couldn’t reach the payment provider. Nothing was charged. Try again in a moment.A problem on our side. Try again shortly.

Paying doesn’t move your renewal date, and neither does a retry that goes through. The payment covers the month (or year) that began on your renewal date, so the next charge is still on the usual day, even when that is soon after you paid. Each payment covers a different month: the late one pays for the month you already had while we were retrying, never the same month twice. If a payment only goes through more than a month late, the months you missed aren’t charged.

A pause starts on your renewal date, so you never lose days you’ve paid for (see Pausing your plan). When you resume, the plan starts again that day: it’s charged then and renews a month (or a year) from that day. The time it was paused isn’t charged. If your bank refuses a renewal payment days after accepting it while your pause is waiting to start, we try your other cards as usual, and the pause starts at the end of the period that’s paid.

  • “Your bank didn’t approve the card. Nothing was charged. Try another card.” Your bank refused the card when you tried to save it. Try another card.
  • The new card doesn’t show yet. Your bank is still confirming it. Check again in a minute before adding it a second time.
  • The red box says a payment for this plan is being processed, and there is no Pay now. A payment is on its way. A bank payment can take a few business days to confirm, and we don’t offer Pay now meanwhile, so you’re never charged twice for the same month (or year). If it doesn’t go through, Pay now comes back.
  • Pay now is greyed out. The plan has no card to charge. Add a card first.
  • I don’t see “Use my card on file”. You have no verified card on file, or it is already on this plan. It is not offered when you change the primary card of a plan that has one.
