Services you offer

A service is something your profile offers: breeding, grooming, training, pet sitting and walking, boarding and more. It is different from a profession, which is your career (see Your professions). A groomer employed by a salon has the Groomer profession; a groomer who takes their own clients also offers Grooming.

What you offer decides what your Dashboard opens:

  • Breeding or Stud service opens Pets → Litters (litters, bred animals, My Breeds) and lists you in the breeder directory.
  • Any service people book (grooming, training, boarding, sitting, transport and so on) opens Schedule.
  • Services also open Commerce (to sell them), Certificates and, for training, Courses.

People searching for a service on United Pet Club find every profile that offers it. Each result says whether it is an Individual or a Business, and visitors can tick Businesses only.

  1. In the Dashboard, open My Profile → Services (on a business: My Business → Services).
  2. Select Add service.
  3. Choose the service.
  4. Add the animals you offer it for. Most services need at least one; for transport, photography, aftercare, nutrition or lost pet search you can leave it empty to offer it for every animal.
  5. Select Add.

Each animal is its own entry, so Breeding · Dog and Breeding · Cat are two. To stop offering one, select the × on it.

Boarding, daycare, veterinary care and veterinary pharmacy happen at a clinic, a pharmacy or a facility, so they belong to a business. To offer one, create a business profile (Account → Profiles → Add a profile) and add the service there.

Offering your first service makes your personal profile a professional one, just like adding a profession. Removing your last service and your last profession makes it personal again, unless other professional records (a verified licence, open to work, your résumé) keep it professional.

A business profile also has one business type: what kind of business it is. Set it under My Business → Business type:

Business typeFor
ClinicA veterinary practice, clinic or hospital (with the animals it treats)
Vet pharmacyA licensed veterinary pharmacy
Kennel or catteryA breeding programme, with boarding or training if you offer them (with its animals)
Grooming salonA salon, mobile van or grooming studio
Training schoolClasses, private training, sport and working dogs
Pet careSitting, walking, boarding, daycare
Other pet servicesTransport, photography, aftercare, farrier, rehab
ShelterA shelter or rescue organization
NonprofitAdvocacy, animal welfare or emergency response
Store, Manufacturer, BrandSelling products. A store or manufacturer says what it sells with its specialties, for example Professional Equipment & Supplies, Veterinary Equipment & Supplies, Veterinary Medicine Supplier / Distributor (stores) or Mobile Unit Builder for grooming vans, trailers and mobile vet units (manufacturers)
ClubA club, association or registry
Academic researchA university, veterinary school or research institute
Other businessAnother kind of pet business

The business type and the services are separate. A kennel that also grooms keeps Kennel or cattery as its type and adds Grooming under Services. Changing the type ends the old type (including the breeds listed under a kennel type); the services stay until you remove them.

When you sign up a business, or add one under Profiles → Add Profile, the Specializations step asks for both: What kind of business is it? and What services do you offer? The services that fit the type you pick are ticked for you. When the type has specialties of its own, they’re listed first under What services do you offer?, in their groups, with nothing ticked. A Manufacturer sees Mobile Unit Builder there, so a grooming-van builder can tick it while setting up. The services follow under Services.

Specialties say what a business specializes in within its type: a store that sells clinic equipment, a manufacturer that builds grooming vans. Buyers find businesses by specialty, and some tools need one: quote ads for grooming vans and trailers need Mobile Unit Builder.

My Business → Business type in the Dashboard (/dashboard/business-type#specialties), the Specialties card under the business type. A new business can also tick them on the Specializations step while it’s set up (see above); this card is where you change them later.

  1. Choose and Save the business type first. Its specialties appear in the card only once the type is saved; if you’ve picked a new type but not saved it, the card says Save the new business type first.
  2. Tick every specialty that fits. They’re grouped, and the card counts how many you’ve selected.
  3. Select Save specialties.

Saving replaces the whole list. If the business still holds specialties from an earlier business type, the card names them before you save: Saving removes … They belong to an earlier business type.

The Specialties card of a Manufacturer business: the Food, Treats & Supplements and Products & Equipment groups, Mobile Unit Builder ticked with "1 selected" next to its group, the For the services you offer section, and the Save specialties button

  • A business can hold the specialties of its business type, and the specialties that go with the services it offers.
  • A person can hold the specialties of their professions, and the specialties that go with the services they offer.

A specialty that doesn’t fit is refused when you save.

On a personal profile, the Veterinary Pharmacist profession has the specialty Veterinary Pharmacy Technician, for people who prepare and dispense veterinary medicines under a pharmacist’s supervision.

A business with the type Vet pharmacy says what kind of pharmacy it is. The six specialties sit in the Pharmacy group of the Specialties card. A clinic or any other business that offers the Veterinary pharmacy service can pick them too.

SpecialtyFor
Compounding PharmacyPrepares veterinary medicines in custom strengths and forms, such as liquids, chews and transdermal gels

These specialties describe the pharmacy. None of them lets it sell prescription medicines on United Pet Club.

A business that offers Farrier & hoof care picks its hoof care work from the Hoof Care group of the Specialties card. The same six specialties belong to the Farrier profession: a farrier picks them under My Profile → Professions (see Your specialties), and so does a person who offers Farrier & hoof care without the profession.

SpecialtyFor
TrimmingRoutine hoof trimming and balancing for horses, ponies, donkeys and mules

A licensed veterinary pharmacy signs up as a business with the business type Vet pharmacy. The Veterinary pharmacy service is ticked for it (a clinic with its own pharmacy can add the service too). The pharmacy gets the same Dashboard menus as other businesses that sell, starting with Commerce, and appears on the public site under Find care → Veterinary Pharmacies. Under My Business → Business type → Specialties it says what kind of pharmacy it is (see Pharmacy specialties).

A pharmacist adds Veterinary pharmacist to their personal profile as a profession: it shows on their profile and career portfolio and unlocks no business tool. A personal profile cannot offer the pharmacy service.

Selling prescription medicines online is not available yet.
